One of the worst feelings as a coach or parent is providing your athlete with information that you later
find out is incorrect! You then have to undue muscle memory that can be troublesome at best.
This clip was designed to bring forth some of the unfortunately common incorrect coaching philosophies and
explain why they are not effective in teaching fundamentally sound athletes. The intent of the clip was NOT to
step on the toes of caring parents or coaches, but to help strengthen their awareness of the correct
mechanics.
In addition to poor coaching philosophies, we add some thoughts on the mental side of hitting. Each hitter
needs a philosophy of what pitches to swing at and which to lay off of. Many young hitters do not have a
philosophy and therefore end up chasing pitches that are not in the strike zone. You’ll find an easy to
implement strategy that will eliminate poor at bats because of pitch selection.
This video will demonstrate:
Why “squishing the bug” is a poor strategy that creates little energy transferred into a pitch
Why teaching swinging down on the baseball is a myth that does not exist at the MLB level
Why “keeping your shoulders level” cannot occur in a fundamentally correct swing
Why “keeping your shoulder in” causes mechanical problems in a swing
Hitting philosophy that will teach hitters to be selective and narrow down the strike zone
Why is this video clip important to
watch?
As I mentioned above, once you learn which movements are destructive to the hitting motion, then progress
can be made in solving the problems. This clip will build your understanding of what to look for in your
athlete to avoid prolonged and frustrating slumps.
